Best of Shledon

It's a little late in the day so I decided to post some humor to cheer up the people who had a crappy day. Who better to do that then Dr. Sheldon Cooper. Enjoy!

Blast From The Past

There is a pretty interesting site called dearphotograph.com where photographs are submitted of a current place with a photo of the past being held in front of the area to depict of a then and now effect. One of the most powerful ones I saw was the one below of one of the twin towers coming down. Check out more at the link above.

Self Aware Stroke

Jill Bolte Taylor is a Neuroscientist who woke up one morning and felt a little strange. As she started her daily routines she started notice she was slowly losing control of certain parts of her body and her conscious reality was starting to slip away. In this lecture she describes step by step, how she studied herself go through, what she would later realize was a stroke.

Merry Christmas!!!

Hey I just want to wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas.

Storm Freerun

This is appropriate because on my first trip to central London back in September of this year we came across a bunch of freerunners practicing near a underground entrance. I give them a lot of credit because although I rollerblade, I would not be flipping off of ledges or springboard off of the ledge in Trafalgar Square. Check out the video.

Preparing for War

I came across this New York home built during the cold war era. It is fitted with a converted missile silo that is now an underground living area. Included in the newly dropped $1,760,000 price, is the house, plane hanger, runway for a plane and a huge amount of land overlooking White Face Mountain. You can check out more information on it here

The God of Apple

If Steve Jobs was the Father of Apple, Inc., then Dennis Ritchie was God. Dennis Ritchie, a major contributor to the computer world, developed the programming language, C, which would later be used to write the Unix which is the platform for Apple's operating system. We lost two major figures of 20th and 21st Century computer technology in a matter of a week, to which we should commemorate both men for having there hand in how the world functions today. You can read the full article about Dennis Ritchie HERE.

WANT TO SEE SOME TALENT?

If you wanna see some real talent head, over to my two personal friends and my old flat mate's blogs: Heidi Teksle Amundsen and Caroline Moen. Heidi a Photographer and Caroline a graphic designer, both studying at Kingston University, are two people that the art world should keep their eyes on.

Space Painting

When you start to watch this video you can help but wonder what he going to create because it kinda looks like a modernized Jackson Pollock style. If you keep watching after he puts pot top down its gets really good and when he is done your jaw will be on the floor. Take a look.

Brilliant Ideas

This is pretty cool. I came across this on stumbleupon.com. It is a bunch of photographs of either inventions or solutions for minor problems such as stacking your beers in pyramid form in the fridge. Check this out and comments some ideas of your own. My Last Walk in Kingston

Today, on my last walk to my University in London, I was a bit down because I am leaving England tomorrow and it will be a little while before I returned to this town. It was starting drizzle a little bit when I saw a single rainbow in the sky. When I turned the corner is when I saw a pretty cool sight, a DOUBLE RAINBOW. Other then thinking of the funny youtube video, I started thinking about how lucky I was to have had the experience to study abroad, and most important of all, how lucky I was to have met such amazing people, to whom I am going to miss very much. What I found so amazing is that everyone was brought up in different backgrounds and heritages, but everyone got along and gave a special element to the group which made it amazing. So I want to dedicate this post to the FREAKING AWESOME GROUP, and although there is a few that are only here for a short time, I hope everyone had a great time together and continues to be life long friends. I love you guys.

Extreme Mountain Camping

Extreme Mountain Camping, I don't even know what to say other then, Herregud! (oh my god in Norwegian). I tried to google it, but not a lot of information came up, only images. But this is the most intense thing I have seen since the tightrope/base jumping video I posted the other day. You can see more pictures HERE.

Planet Alignment

This is a pretty cool page I came across that gives you the current alignment of the planets. It also allows you to choose other days, such as your birthday. You can see the the phases of the moon and you can fast forward through the days, months, and years for alignments as well. This all can be done in one of two modes, Copernicus' Heliocentrism or Tycho Brahe's Tychonian System.

Night Sky Timelapse

This short video is a timelapse done for Ben Canales on a trek to Crater Lake, Oregon. Ben entered this film into a National Geographic Contest and won first place. The shots are pretty amazing and the video is not the extent of his work. His flickr photostream is filled with amazing photographs of stars and the outdoors.

The Scale of the Universe

For all you Big Bang Theory (the tv show) lovers, you will enjoy this link. Cary & Michael Huang and  has come up with a clever way to scale "everything" in the Universe for the naked eye. It begins with String Theory (what Sheldon is working on in the BBT) to the overall estimated size of the Universe (kind of what Raj is working on).

I Believe I Can Fly

If this isn't an adrenaline rush I don't know what is. These guys are tightrope walkers and base jumpers. This is only the trailer but the stuff they do in three minutes and forty five seconds is amazing. Just looking at their faces you can tell there is no fear because they are basically staring death in the face and calling his bluff. These guys have a bunch more videos if you want to check them out at Sebmontaz.com.

Photographs from the ISS

Below are 6 amazing photos tweeted by Douglas H. Wheelock during Expedition 25 in the Fall of 2010. Apart from a few photographs, Wheelock took most of them from the International Space Station and relayed them back via twitter @Astro_wheels. These photos show how small we really are in this vast universe. It also shows the progression of technology by demonstrating the ability to instantly relay pictures from SPACE! The rest of the photos can be seen at THIS LINK as well as other photographs at Douglas' twitter account list above.

A 12 Year Old Inspiration

Thomas Suarez is a twelve year old app builder. Key word being twelve, Thomas as built apps for the iphone and ipod touch and ipad. This young man should be an inspiration to kids his age and even adults. At such a young age his work ethic is probably a lot better then most adults. Technology companies better keep an eye on him because from this video alone, I as well as you can tell he has a lot of ambition and potential.

Where Do Fortune Cookies Originate From?

This is a presentation done by Jennifer Lee on stereotypical Chinese-American Dishes. Jennifer travels around the United States and Asia to try to find the roots to meals such as beef and broccoli, chop suey, general toas chicken and even fortune cookies. All of which were not started in China. This is a great presentation and it isn't that long, just over 16 minutes, but it is very informative. Mrs. Lee's presentation brings to light the close mindedness of people and just because a "chinese food resturant" sells it, doesn't mean it is actual food from their culture. But the point is you can relate this video to a lot of cultures and it teaches us not to be so stereotypical.

FutureMe

Ok..I hate to flood the blog but I came across this amazing but creepy website where you can send an email to yourself in email in the future. So you can basically tell yourself 1-20 years from now how good or bad your life is, your accomplishments to date, your current girlfriend etc. The possibilities are endless, but I am trying to picture my face when I get the email I sent to myself 5 years from now.  Enjoy!

Test Your Speed

This is a pretty interesting website that measures your internet speed and download rate. You can use this for fun or you can challenge your ISP (internet service provider) to see if they are producing the speeds they are supposedly supplying. Enjoy and share your comments and with others if you find this useful.
